Radon Mitigation in New Freedom Borough

New Freedom is a southern borough along the I-83 corridor, near the Maryland line. Being near the line does not move it out of York County’s radon zone.

Houses in New Freedom Borough

The borough has an older center and later neighborhoods around it. Basements are typical. Some newer houses were built with a passive radon rough-in because builders in Zone 1 counties often leave a capped pipe and leave the fan for later. Older houses in the center have block basements, a sump added after a wet year, and no rough-in at all. Those are two different visits.

New Freedom is still York County Piedmont, EPA Zone 1, not a Maryland exception. The same shale and limestone pattern continues to the line. A test kit bought for a move does not know which state the soil is in. If the house is on the Maryland side, say so — this page is the Pennsylvania borough. Soil gas on the Pennsylvania side is why the fan, once installed, runs all year.

What the visit is usually about

Look in the basement for a capped pipe before you assume a full install. New-construction radon is that capped pipe. Sub-slab depressurization is the older basement with no rough-in. Shrewsbury Township is the surrounding page.

New Freedom Borough is the Pennsylvania office. Shrewsbury Township is nearby and not the same counter. EPA zone map includes York County in Zone 1 down to this end of the county. A passive rough-in that was never permitted as an active system may still need an electrical permit when we add the fan. Pennsylvania DEP radon page is the state context for that work.
